New Delhi: As Friday prayers ended, a massive protest started from the Jama Masjid here in the old city with Bhim Army chief Chandra Shekhar 'Azad' leading the chants of "Jai Bhim" and holding placards with Babasaheb Ambedkar's posters, demanding that only the original Constitution be enforced.
Chandra Shekhar Azad, who was also holding a copy of the Constitution, was later detained by Delhi police.
The protests were in continuation of those taking place across the nation against the just enacted Citizenship (Amendment) Act and the National Resgister of Cirtizens (NRC).
Demanding withdrawal of the CAA the protestors held up copies of the Constitution and pictures of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar and Paramveer Chakra awardee Abdul Hameed as they raised slogans like, "Hindu Muslim Sikh Isai, Apas mei hai bhai bhai," and "kala kanoon wapas lo," (Withdraw black law).
"Go to India Gate and see for your self the names of Muslims who had laid their life for India. Had our anchesters sacrificed their lives for this day?" a protester asked.
The crowd swelled despite a prohibitory order in place, even a few women protester could be seen.
With the national flag held high the protestor shouted: "Hindustan Zindabad". Some of the protesters are also gifting roses to Delhi police personnel.
The Delhi Police had denied permission to Chandra Shekhar Azad's protest march against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act from Jama Masjid to Jantar Mantar. But he tweeted that he would make it to the area anyway.
"Please ignore the rumours of my arrest. I am reaching Jama Masjid," he tweeted.
According to police sources, elders from the area were roped in after thousands of protesters started raising slogans with placards against the new law passed by the Parliament.
"We have experienced in Jamia and Seelampur case that participation of elders helps maintain peace. So, early in the morning we made sure elders of the locality were on board with us," a top police officer in the district told IANS.
Though the elders did not give a call to anyone from refraining to attend the march, they were seen calming down the crowd. They also facilitated those who did not want to attend the march, to safely reach home.
Human chains on both sides of the gate number 1 of Jama Masjid were formed to let others pass after attending the afternoon prayers at the place of worship.
There are also reports of protest outside Makkah Masjid near Charminar in Hyderabad and outside many mosques across India after the Friday prayers.
