Lucknow: Indicating that the appointments of Priyanka Gandhi and Jyotiraditya Scindia as secretaries in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls are not temporary, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Monday exhorted the party cadres to work to bring in a Congress government in the state.
"We will be voting for the Lok Sabha elections few months from now. I have asked Priyanka Gandhi and Jyotiraditya Scindia to get maximum number of seats for the party from UP. But, I want to tell you. You should work so that a Congress government takes charge after the next state elections", he said while addressing the party workers after a roadshow in Lucknow.
The Congress roadshow was organised in Uttar Pradesh capital to launch Priyanka and Scindia who came to the state for the first time after their appointment as party secretaries.
"You have given chance to every party. Everyone has failed you. Now its time a Congress government comes to power in the state", he said adding that the state cannot be left at the mercy of other parties.
"Uttar Pradesh is in the heart of the country. Congress party began its political journey from here. We cannot allow the party to remain weak in the state", he added.
Asserting that he has immense respect for SP leader Akhilesh Yadav and BSP Chief Mayawati, Rahul Gandhi said, "Their alliance is also contesting the elections. Despite all the respect for the two leaders, I want to tell you that the party will not be on the backfoot here or any other part of the country."
Earlier, Rahul Gandhi, accompanied by Priyanka, Scindia, UPCC Chief Raj Babbar and other Congress leaders, started the roadshow from the Lucknow airport and travelled about 25 kms, first atop a bus and later on a truck, with people standing on both sides and on rooftops.
Posters of Priyanka lined the streets of the UP capital and hundreds of Congress supporters, accompanied by drummers, chanted her name after she emerged from the airport with her brother. They were raising slogans "Chokidar Chor Hai" and also said they wanted to see Rahul Gandhi as Prime Minister and Priyanka Gandhi as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.
Throughout the roadshow, Priyanka was seen waving at supporters, party workers and local onlookers as she stood atop the party bus surrounded by a cordon of security personnel.
The roadshow ended at Nehru Bhavan - the party headquarters in Lucknow. Party workers expected that Priyanka Gandhi will address them at the end of the roadshow. But, they were left diasppointed.
