Agra (Uttar Pradesg): At the time when people belonging to different minority communities are being demonised and attacked over fabricated charges of cow slaughter, a Muslim villager in Bhargain town of Kasganj district in Uttar Pradesh is hailed as a hero after a video of him helping an ailing cow, abandoned and lying on roadside, surfaced on the social media.

"What Rehan Khan has done is exemplary and a slap on the face of the people who wants to destroy the communal fabric and unity of the country", an official of the local veterinary department said.

Talking to ummid.com, Rehan Khan said that the ailing and abandoned cow was lying on the roadside since last few days. People would pass by without lending any help to the suffering cow. When Rehan Khan noticed the cow, he immediately rushed to provide the cow relief from chilling cold and also arranged fodder.

"Then I contacted Satish Chandra Gupta, the Principal of RBL College who called the officials of the local veterinary department", Rehan said.

Abandoned and stray cows are on the rise in Uttar Pradesh ever since the BJP came to power in the state and started a crackdown on slaughter houses and cattle trade.

To control the situation, the government announced establishment of shelters. But, a good number of these shelters remain just on paper and most of the abandoned cattles are wandering in fields and are also damaging crops.

Before the crackdown, farmers used to sell unproductive and older cattle. But, the government's policy has made the trade impossible.

“Earlier, we used to sell the male calf or unproductive cattle such as older cows for around Rs 4,000 to 5,000. Now, we can’t sell them. So, we leave them on the streets,” Parveen Kumar (48) of Dabathwa village of Meerut district is quoted by The Economics Times in a recent report.

Kumar said the cost of one animal per month is around 6,000 and it becomes difficult for farmers to maintain it, especially if the cattle is of no use. Hence they don't have any option but to abandone them.
