New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) is most likely to release the 2019 Lok Sabha election schedule in the first week of March, reports citing government sources said on Friday.
The term of the present Lok Sabha ends on June 3. The Election Commission is in the process of deciding the number of phases and the months in which polling would be held, they said.
The sources further said that the multi-phase polling across 543 parliamentary constituencies will continue till May and the 2019 Lok Sabha election results are expected to be declared by mid-May.
There is a possibility that the EC may go by the precedent and hold assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh along with the Lok Sabha polls. Since the Jammu and Kashmir assembly has been dissolved, the EC is bound to hold fresh polls there within six months", PTI reported.
The Election Commission of India had in 2014 announced the election schedule on March 5 and the nine-phase electoral exercise was spread across April and May. While the first phase polling was on April 7, the last phase was on May 12. The 2014 election results were announced on May 16.
In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the then UPA alliance government was dethroned from power by the BJP-led NDA. The BJP had won 282 of the 543 Lok Sabha seats whereas the Congress was reduced to 44 seats in the last general elections.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has sought legal action against people behind circulating the fake schedule of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
