Dhaka: A massive fire tore through a 19-story commercial building at Banani Road in Dhaka on Thursday, with many office workers feared trapped in the latest major inferno to hit the Bangladesh capital.
According to local English newspaper The Daily Star, one person has been confirmed dead in the fire which is yet to be brought under control even after three hours of efforts.
An on-duty doctor of Kurmitola General Hospital told The Daily Star that the unidentified dead body has been kept there. Several others injured were also hospitalised there. His cause of death could not be ascertained immediately. The youth is around 30 years of age.
The newspaper said firefighters had begun rescuing those trapped inside the 19-storied FR Tower, on Banani Road 17, amid a crisis of water to douse the blaze.
Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters’ Duty Officer Md Rasel told The Daily Star the fire was yet to be brought under control around 4:00pm. 20 units were at scene.
When the fire sparked around 1:00am, at least six people were seen falling off while trying to escape the blaze. Many others were trying to climb down on the ledges, The Daily Star reported.
