Jangipur (West Bengal): The Communist Party of India Marxist (CPI-M) Wednesday named Zulfikar Ali to contest the 2019 Parliamentary elections from Jangipur - one of the many Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal dominated by a large number of Muslims.
Zulfikar Ali will face Abhijit Mukherjee of the Congress in Jangipur. Abhijit Mukherjee, the sitting MP from Jangipur, is son of former President of India and secior Congress leader Pranab Mukherjee.
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) of Mamata Banerjee has fielded Khalilur Rahman whereas the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) has given the party ticket to Mafuja Khatun (Mehfooza Khatoon).
Jangipur Lok Sabha seat comprises 07 West Bengal Assembly segments including Suti, Jangipur, Raghunathganj, Sagardighi, Lalgola, Nabagram and Khargram. Two assembly seats Nabagram and Khargram are reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC).
Abhijit Mukherjee is winning from here since 2012. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections he had bagged 3,78,201 votes to defeat Muzaffar Hussain of CPI (M) by a little over 8,000 votes. Muzaffar Hussain had got 3,70,040 votes.
Other notable candidates who contested the 2014 Lok Sabha electionf from Jangipur but lost were Sk Nurul Islam of Trinamool Congress (2,07,455 votes) and Samrat Ghosh of BJP (96,751 votes).
Jangipur Lok Sabha seat was in the past also represented by former President of India and secior Congress leader Pranab Mukherjee.
Polling for the 2019 General Elections in Jangipur will be held on April 23, 2019 in Phase 3. The counting of votes will be done on May 23, 2019.
