Mumbai: In a significant political development ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly polls, the Asaduddin Owaisi-led Hyderabad-based All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) broke its alliance with the Prakash Ambedkar-led Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA).
"We respect and honour Prakash Ambedkar and wish him the best of luck. Irrespective of the alliance, we shall continue to take up the cause of the oppressed classes and weaker sections of society," AIMIM Aurangabad MP and senior leader Syed Imtiaz Jaleel told IANS.
He cited the primary reason for snapping of ties with VBA - which fought the 2019 Lok Sabha elections jointly with AIMIM - as the "unjustified and unacceptable" share of seats to the AIMIM, as it only had eight out of 288 seats in the state Assembly.
Asaduddin Owaisi and Prakash Ambedkar had formed the alliance ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha Polls. The Vanchit Aghadi, as the alliance was known as, was responsible for the defeat of Congress and NCP candidates in many parlaimentary constituencies.
The alliance had also paved the way for the victory of Imtiaz Jaleel from Aurangabad - a Shiv Sena stronghold.
The AIMIM decision to snap tie with Vanchit Aghadi is surprising as the the two leaders were upbeat over the votes the aghadi had bagged in the 2019 elections. Owaisi and Ambedkar both had contineously pushing for Dalit Muslim unity and wanted to keep their alliance in future elections, especially the state elections in Maharashtra.
State election in Mahrashtra is due to be held in the month of October, 2019.
