THE 2020 Ranking out; None from India, Muslim states among top 200 universities

London: The University of Oxford tops the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2020 edition for the fourth consecutive year. However, not a single university from India and the Muslim states figured in the list of top 200 varsities.

India and Muslim states (more than 57) both claim a glorious past in the field of education and research. But none of them could find a place in the list of top 200 universities of the world. Worse, most of the universities in these countries slipped from their previous rank.

According to the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2020 released Wednesday, a maximum of 60 universities from the United States are among world's top 200.

The US is followed by the United Kingdom with 28 varsities, Germany with 23 varsities, and Australia and Netherlands each having 11 of their universities in the list of top 200 universities of the world.

07 universities each from Canada, China and Switzerland are in the list of top 200 varsities. Other countries are South Korea with 06 varsities, and France, Hong Kong and Sweden having 05 universities each in the list of world's top 200 universities.

56 Indian Universities in THE 2020

The only consolation for India is it has 56 universities listed in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2020 as against 49 in 2019. But, none of these universities was able to improve or retain their earlier rank.

As compared to THE 2019 ranking, IISc has fallen in the bracket of 301-350 place. IISc is joined by another Indian institute i.e. IIT Ropar in the same 301-350 rank bracket.

Of the total 56 Indian universities, 23 have been placed in the 300 – 800 rank. Premier Technology institutes i.e. IITs have been leading the pack of Indian Institutes in these rankings. Additionally, other reputed Universities and Institutes like Institute of Chemical Technology, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Delhi University (DU), Jamia Millia Islamia, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Punjab University and other have also found place on the THE 2020 edition of World University Rankings.

In terms of the ranks, while Jamia Millia islamia has been placed in the rank of 601-800 along with JNU and Savitribai Phule Pune University, AMU has been placed in 801-1000 rank list.

07 Saudi Universities in THE 2020 Top Universities

In terms of numbers, Turkey tops the list with 34 - maximum number of universities from the Muslim states, finding place in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2020 edition. Turkey is followed by Egypt with 20 universities ranked by the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2020 edition.

But, rank-wise the best university in Turkey are Cankaya University and Sabancı University that have been placed in 401-500 rank bracket. Similarly, Aswan University and Mansoura University of Egypt are also placed in 401-500 rank bracket.

On the other hand, Cairo University is in the range of 601-800 rank list whereas the renowned Al Azhar University is in the 1001+ slab.

Seven universities of Saudi Arabia have found place in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2020 edition. What is special about Saudi Arabia is 02 of its top universities - King Abdulaziz University - ranked under 201-250, and Alfaisal University - under 251-300 rank slab, are among world's top 300 universities.

On the other hand, King Saud University (KSU) and King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, and King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health are placed in 501-600 rank bracket whereas King Khalid University is ranked in 601-800 slab.

As many as 14 universities of Pakistan have also found the place in 2020 THE ranking with Quaid-i-azam University leading the list in 401-500 rank bracket.

Besides them, 04 universities of the United Arab Emirates, 05 from Jordan, 13 from Malaysia, and 01 each from Kuwait, Qatar Oman and Brunei Darussalam have also found places in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2020 edition.
