Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Palaniswami on Saturday said communal colour should not be given to the battle against Covid-19.
He also appealed to people not to detest those affected by Covid-19 and their family members but extend love and warmth to them.
In a statement, Palaniswami said the coronavirus attacks all and doesn't differentiate people based on caste, creed or religion.
His statement assumes importance as many of the 485 Covid-19 patients in Tamil Nadu comprise those who attended the Ijtema - religious gathering organised by Tablighi Jamaat in Delhi.
Palaniswami's statement came amidst widespread anger over media coverage of Coronavirus infection by a section of Indian media and TV channels.
According to Palaniswami, in order to prevent the spread of coronavirus people should maintain social distancing even during festive days and avoid religious meetings.
He said the District Collectors have been asked to speak to private hospitals and make necessary arrangements for them to restart operations.
While quarantining the family members of Covid-19 patients and their contacts, the assistance of community leaders could be sought in choosing the location, he said.
The Chief Minister also appealed to the community leaders to co-operate in counselling those who have been quarantined.
Palaniswami also said the shops selling essential items can do business between 6 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Earlier the business time was 6 a.m. and 2.30 p.m.
