Police Beat Journalist at Mumbai Bagh

Mumbai: Mumbai Press Club (MPC) Thursday demanded from Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Home Minister Anil Deshmukh to take action against the Police personnel who roughed up Ashish Raje, a senior photographer and Joint Secretary of MPC at 'Mumbai Bagh'.

"This is highly condemnable. These hooligans in uniform must be punished Mr CM, home minister and CP", Mumbai Press Club said, tagging a video in which police personnel can be seen forcing upon Raje at anti-CAA-NRC protest site near Nagpada in Mumbai.

In solidarity with the women protesting at Delhi's Shaheen Bagh, the Mumbai protest site is named as 'Mumbai Bagh'.

"They slapped and beat as if I am a criminal", Raje said while talking to media after the incident.

He said the police was asking him to show his ID.

"I went a bit closer to the barricades as there were some women standing there and was trying to show them my ID card. But, they started beating me", he said.

"This video speaks for itself. Mumbai police harassing one of the most experienced news photographers Ashish Raje. @OfficeofUT must take action", senior journalist Nikhil Wagle said.

"The @MumbaiPolice personnel on Thursday manhandled senior photographer Ashish Raje while he was covering the #MumbaiBagh protest. This conduct of police is just not acceptable. There should be an inquiry into this and action must be taken against the errant cops", Mateen Hafeez, TOI journalist wrote on Twitter.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh has promised to take action against the police personnel involved in the incident.

"Just got to know about the way Ashish Raje(media photographer of Mumbai press club) was manhandled by the police. This is an appalling act & I will personally look into the inquiry of this matter. Strict disciplinary action shall be taken against those involved", he wrote on Twitter.
