New Delhi: In a fresh reminder, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked the universities to stop taking admissions in MPhil (Masterof Philosophy) programmes.
"It has come to the notice of the UGC that a few Universities are inviting fresh applications for M.Phil. (Master of Philosophy) program. In this regard, it is to bring to the notice that the M.Phil. degree is not a recognized degree", the UGC said in the latest notification.
"(Therefore) The university's authorities are requested to take immediate steps to stop admissions to M.Phil. programmes for the 2023-24 academic year", the UGC said.
In the notification dated December 26, 2023 the University Grants Commission (UGC) also warned students that the MPhil is no longer a recognised degree.
"Further, students are advised not to take admission in M.Phil. Programme", the UGC said.
The UGC said it has framed University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2022. It was published in the Gazette of India on 7th November, 2022.
"The regulation clearly states that Higher Educational Institutions shall not offer M.Phil program", the UGC said.
