Days after attack over Taraweeh, foreign students asked to leave Gujarat varsity hostels

Ahmedabad: In an order coming about three weeks after attack on some international students for offering Taraweeh prayers on campus, the Gujarat University has asked seven foreign students - six from Afghanistan and one from East Africa, to vacate their hostel rooms.

The Gujarat University officials said the international students have been asked to vacate their hostel rooms for overstaying.

“Six students from Afghanistan and one from East Africa were asked to vacate their hostel rooms after they were found overstaying", University Vice Chancellor Neerja Gupta told the news agency PTI.

"They had completed their studies and were staying in the hostel as ex-students due to some pending administrative work", she added.

Some foreign students, who were offering Taraweeh – Special Night Prayers performed during Ramadan, in Gujarat University Hostel were attacked allegedly by Hindutva extremists on March 16, 2024.

The students said they were offering the Salah or Namaz after obtaining permission from the university admin. They said they offered the Salah on campus as there was no mosque nearby.

The students also alleged that after the incident the police came in but did not take any action and let them go away.

The incident had sparked widespread outrage. An Afghan and a Gambian delegation also visited the university few days after the attack and held a meeting with the vice-chancellor over safety measures.

There are around 300 International students in the Gujarat University enrolled in different courses.
