Senior Superintendent of Police Prahlad Meena told news agency PTI the Madrasa and the Mosque were "built on illegally encroached government land" and the demolitions were carried out in the heavy presence of police and Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) personnel in compliance with a court order.

Talking to media DM Nainital, Vandana Singh, said the demolition of the Madrasa and the adjacent Mosque was not an isolated incident.

"The demolition drive was carried following the order given by the High Court. Notices were also been issued against the illegal encroachment. The demolition of the madrasa was not an isolated incident", she told reporters.

Loal residents however alleged that the Madrasa and the adjacent Masjid were demolished despite a stay order by the court.
