Kanpur: The Allahabad High Court has issued notice to the Uttar Pradesh government seeking the response from the authorities on a liquor shop running near a school in Kanpur.
The Allahabad High Court notice to the state government was issued after a 5-year-old student files a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking the removal of the liquor shop from near his school.
The LKG student of MR Jaipuria School in Ratan Sadan area of Azad Nagar in Kanpur district of Uttar Pradesh has alleged that drunk people are very often found creating a ruckus near the school after consuming alcohol.
Advocate Ashutosh Sharma, who represented the LKG student in the High Court, said that the shop is running within a radius of 30 meters, bypassing the rule of opening a liquor shop 50 meters away from the school.
The student in his petition has also alleged the liquor shop opens hours before the schedule time of 10:00 am. People consume alcohol near the boundary wall of the zoo indulge in abuse and fights. A complaint was made to the District Magistrate, but no action was taken, the petition said.
The department on the other hand said the liquor shop is running since last more than 30 years whereas the school was established only in 2019, local media reports said.
The court nonetheless asked the state government counsel to seek a response from the authorities as to why the licence of the liquor shop in Kanpur was being renewed even after the school came into existence in the vicinity, according to news agency PTI.
A division bench comprising Justice Manoj Kumar Gupta and Justice Kshitij Shailendra directed to list the PIL on March 13 for the next hearing.
