Mumbai: The Election Commission of India Wednesday February 28, 2024 appointed senior IAS officer S. Chokalingam as the new Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Maharashtra.
The appointment of S. Chokalingam as CEO Maharashtra comes barely weeks ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha 2024 elections, due to be announced next month.
Chokalingam, 56, is an IAS officer of 1996 batch’s Maharashtra cadre and replaces S. M. Deshpande, a 1991 batch IAS officer.
As the CEO, Chokalingam will oversee the work of the Lok Sabha elections as well as the state Assembly elections due later this year, an official announcement released on Wednesday said.
Prior to his appointment as state CEO, Chokalingam has held several important assignments in different departments, Collector of several districts including Nashik, and recently as the Director-General of Yashwantrao Chavan Academy of Development Administration (YASHADA) in Pune.
Chokalingam is a qualified lawyer who practiced for a year in Madras High Court, has a Certificate on Gandhian Thought. He completed his Masters in Public Administration (MPA) from Birmingham University, UK.
He has also authored a book and penned research papers on various topics, including property rights and drone surveys of villages.
S Chokalingam is known for innovative and reformative ideas. As Nashik District Collector, he was instrumental in various key development works in the entire region including establishment of Textile Park and a state of the art 200-bed General Hospital in Malegaon.
As Settlement Commissioner & Director Land Records, Maharashtra, S Chokalingam played key role in digitization of land documents including availability of 7x12 in online form.
The Maharashtra State Election Commission is headed by Urvinder Pal Singh Madan (IAS). UPS Madan is the 6th SEC of Maharashtra.
