World’s 3rd largest mosque ‘Djamaa El-Djazair’ inaugurated in Algeria

Algiers: Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune Sunday February 25, 2024 inaugurated and opened to worshippers the world’s 3rd largest mosque in the country's capital Algiers.

The Grand Mosque of Algiers on the North African nation’s Mediterranean coastline locally known as ‘Djamaa El-Djazair’ was inaugurated ahead of Ramadan - the Holy Month of fasting after years of delays.

Scholars and clerics from various countries of the world were in attendance when Abdelmadjid Tebboune inaugurated the mosque and thrown it open for the believers.

The mosque's inaugural event Sunday was largely ceremonial, as it has been open to tourists and state visitors to Algeria for about five years. In fact, prayers were also offered in the mosque since October 2020 when it was opened though ‘unofficially'.

The mosque’s official opening allows it to host many public prayers and events during the month of Ramadan, likely to start on March 11, 2024.

World’s Tallest Minaret

Built by the China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC), the Great Mosque of Algiers, the mosque features the world’s tallest minaret, standing at 265 meters (869 feet), and can accommodate around 120,000 people.

Constructed throughout the 2010s at the cost of more than $800m, the mosque’s modernist design, which incorporates Arab and North African embellishments, covers 27.75 hectares (nearly 70 acres). It houses the Museum of Islamic Civilization, the Cultural Center, and a lecture hall.

According to local media reports, the mosque also has a helicopter landing pad and a library capable of housing up to one million books, according to Al Jazeera.

There is also the Higher School for Islamic Sciences, which includes study rooms and laboratories.

The largest mosque in the world is the Grand Mosque, Masjid al Haram, in Makkah which hosts the Holy Kaaba. The Makkah Grand Mosque has seen a number of expansions in its history, and after the ongoing expansion work to be completed by 2030 the capacity of the mosque is likely to be increased to 30 million pilgrims.
