Giriraj Singh new Minister of Textiles; Sitharaman, Amit Shah retain portfolios

New Delhi: Giriraj Singh, BJP MP from Begusarai Loksabha constituency in Bihar, is the new Minister of Textiles while Amit Shah, Nirmala Sitharaman and Rajnath Singh have retained their portfolios.

PM Narendra Modi Monday June 10, 2024 allocated portfolios to the 71 ministers who took oath along with him yesterday.

Chairing the first cabinet meeting after the 2024 Parliamentary elections were announced, Modi announced Amit Shah will remain Home Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman Finance Minister and Rajnath Singh Defence Minister.

The Ministry of Textiles earlier held by Piyush Goyal however has been given to Giriraj Singh. Goyal has been made Minister of Commerce and Industry.

S Jaishankar also remains Minister of Foreign Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw Minister of Railways, Nitin Gadkari Minister of Road Transport and Highways and Dharmendra Pradhan Minister of Education.

There are a total of 30 Cabinet ministers, 05 Ministers of State with Independent Charge and 36 Ministers of State (MoS) making the current strenght of the cabinet as 72 including the Prime Minister.

As per the Constitution of India, the total strength of the council of ministers cannot exceed 15% of the total number of Lok Sabha MPs. The strength of the 18th Lok Sabha is 543 members and hence the council of ministers cannot be more than 81.

The Modi cabinet has a total of 27 ministers from Other Backward Classes (OBCs), 10 from Scheduled Castes (STs), 5 from Scheduled Tribes (STs) and 5 from minorities.

The Modi cabinet however does not have a single Muslim, the community which is the largest minority group in India.
