New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) Thursday March 21, 2024 arrested Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Chief, Arvind Kejriwal, in liquor excise policy case.
Kejriwal has been arrested from his official residence by a 12-member team of ED officials.
Kejriwal has earlier evaded ED summons a number of times, reportedly at least ten times. He was arrested by ED Thursday after Delhi HC refused to grant him protection from coercive action.
Kejriwal’s close aide and Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, Delhi Health Minister Satyendra Kumar Jain and AAP MP Sanjay Singh were also arrested in the same case.
Kejriwal has been arrested by the ED officials three days after former Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao’s daughter and an MLC from Nizamabad, K Kavitha, in the Delhi Excise Policy Case.

Kejriwal is the second sitting Chief Minister arrested by the agencies of late. Earlier, Hemant Soren, Chief Minister of Jharkhand, was arrested on January 31, 2024 in a corruption case.
Meanwhile, talking to reporters, AAP MLA Atishi Singh said Kejriwal will remain the Chief Minister.
She also said the party has approached the Supreme Court of India seeking bail for Arvind Kejriwal.
Codemning the arrest of Arvind Kejriwal, senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said that INDIA bloc is standing strongly behind Kejriwal.
"A scared dictator wants to create a dead democracy", Rahul said.
"While capturing all the institutions including the media, breaking up the parties, extorting money from companies, freezing the account of the main opposition party was not enough for the 'devilish power', now the arrest of the elected Chief Ministers has also become a common thing", he said.
"INDIA will give a befitting reply to this", he added.
CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury while condemning Kejriwal's arrest said, "Strongly condemn the arrest of Delhi CM, Shri Arvind Kejriwal by the ED. It’s the second sitting CM of the INDIA bloc to be arrested. Clearly, Modi and the BJP are in panic over people’s rejection in the ongoing elections."
"All opposition leaders who defected and joined the BJP are protected and patronised. They are the ‘Satya Harishchandras’!" he said.
"These arrests will only cement people’s desire to defeat BJP, defend democracy and Indian Constitution", he added.
MP and senior AAP commenting on Arvind Kejriwal's arrest said the country is under undeclared emergency.
"India is under an undeclared Emergency. Our democracy stands critically endangered today. Arvind Kejriwal is the second democratically elected opposition CM to be arrested ahead of the upcoming elections. What are we heading towards?" he asked.
"India has never seen such blatant misuse of agencies. This is an act of cowardice, and a vicious plot to silence the strongest opposition voices", he said.
