Watch: Delhi Police Officer kicks, shoves Muslims offering Friday prayers by roadside

New Delhi: In an act termed ‘inhuman’, a Delhi Police Officer has been caught on camera kicking and shoving away some Muslims who were offering Friday prayers by roadside in the Indian capital New Delhi.

In the shocking video, the officer in-charge of a police post in Delhi's Inderlok area, is seen kicking the Muslims from behind while they were in Sujood (prostration).

The Muslim men were offering the Friday prayers by the roadside outside a mosque in the neighbourhood which was full to its capacity.

In the video, the Police Officer seems to even strike one worshipper on his neck.

Some Muslims who were present there tried to persuade the Police Officer, requesting him not to act in this manner as they were offering Namaz. The Police officer however did not budge.

Outrage and then Suspension

The shocking behaviour of the Police officer has sparked outraged.

“The Police Officer kicking the worshippers in prostration does not know the basic ethics ad principles of humanity. What kind of hatred is this which has taken over this policeman?” Imran Pratapgarhi, Congress leader and a Member of Rajya Sabha, said.

Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind President Mahmood Madani has also condemned the police officer’s physical attack on worshippers during the Friday prayers.

In a letter to the Home Minister of the Government of India, Mahmood Madani pointed out that such incidents not only deepen a significant trust deficit but also tarnish the country's global reputation.

He emphasized the lasting psychological impact on the Muslim community when law enforcement becomes the perpetrator, particularly the brutality faced by individuals engaged in prayers.

"As guardians of law and order, the police must uphold their duty and exercise caution when dealing with religious matters to avoid exacerbating the trust deficit and global reputation damage", he said.

Mahmood Madani also expressed concern about the alarming anti-Muslim atmosphere in Delhi, aggravated not only by anti-social elements but also exacerbated by the involvement of state machinery, including the police.

He asserted that the officer's conduct reflects a deep-seated Islamophobic attitude influenced by communal forces, highlighting the need for the officer’s ideological reformation and training for responsible behavior. In his letter he urged the immediate termination of the police officer responsible for the hate-filled actions.

After the outrage, the Delhi Police suspended the officer seen in the video.

"In the incident which happened today, the police post in-charge - who was seen in the video - has been suspended with immediate effect. Necessary disciplinary action is also being taken," MK Meena, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Delhi North), was quoted by news agency PTI.

Mosques in the Indian capital and other areas of India are normally full to their capacities. This forces to Muslims offer Namaz that last lasts for 5-10 minutes by roadside without blocking the traffic.

Moreover, this is not any special privilege granted to the Indian Muslims as worshippers of different religions are regularly seen blocking roads to celebrate their festivals.
