Patna: Nitish Kumar led Janata Dal (United), JD (U), Sunday released its list of for the 2024 General Elections which has among others the name of Mujahid Alam - the lone Muslim to represent the largest minority in Bihar.
Janata Dal (U) is contesting the 2024 Lok Sabha polls in alliance with the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP).
As per the alliance details, JD(U) will contest on 16 of the 40 Parliamentary seats in Bihar. The BJP will field candidates on 17 seats whereas rest of the seats have been left for smaller parties, including Lok Jana Shakti of Chirag Paswan.
The JD-U Sunday released the names of all 16 of its candidates who will fight the 2024 Parliamentary Elections.
The only Muslim fielded by the JD(U) is Mujahid Alam. Mujahid Alam has been fielded from the Muslim dominated Kishanganj Parliamentary Constituency.
Mujahid Alam, a graduate from Patna College is in possible since 2010. He was elected as a Member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly in May 2014 Kochadhaman Assembly by-election as JD(U) candidate.
He retained the seat in the 2015 Bihar Vidhan Sabha Elections by defeating Akhtarul Iman of AIMIM. He however lost the seat to Izhar Asfi of AIMIM in the 2020 Bihar Assembly elections.
Kishanganj Lok Sabha constituency is comprising of six assembly segments - Bahadurganj, Thakurganj, Kishanganj, Kochadhaman, Amour and Baisi. Four of the six seats are currently held by Lalu Yadav's RJD, one each by Congress and AIMIM.
The Kishanganj Parliamentary seat is currently represented by Mohammad Jawed of the Congress Party. It was the only seat the Congress had won from Bihar in the 2019 LS polls.
Renowned Muslim scholar Asrarul Haq Qasmi had won from Kishanganj in 2009 and 2014 general elections.
Meanwhile, the BJP Sunday released its 5th list of 111 candidates for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. None of them is a Muslim.
The highlight of the BJP's 5th list is Varun Gandhi who has been denied the party ticket from Pilibhit. Varun Gandhi is the sitting Pilibhit MP since 2009. Before him, his mother Maneka Gandhi, who has been fielded from Sultanpur seat, was a Member of Parliament from Pilibhit from 1996 to 2004.
The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) has so far fielded only 01 Muslim in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
The lone Muslim fielded by the BJP is Dr Abdul Salam who will contest the 2024 Elections from the Malappuram Parliamentary seat – a Muslim dominated district and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) bastion in Kerala.
On the other hand, the Congress has confirmed 22 Muslims who will contest the 2024 General Elections on the party ticket.
