Thane: A massive explosion followed by fire in a chemical factory in Dombivli MIDC area near Mumbai in Maharashtra Thursday May 23, 2024 has left 13 people dead and 60 others injured.
The incident occurred in Amudan Chemical Pvt Ltd in Dombivli city of Maharashtra's Thane district – some 40 kms from the state capital Mumbai, at 01:40 pm Thursday.
Residents of Dombivli and the surrounding area of around 4 km woke up to a strong stench of burnt chemicals, metal and dust with a thin layer of smoky ash on the roads, shops and homes.
Many people in the area were seen moving around wearing face masks to avoid the stink.
Local administration feared the death toll rising further as many of the 60 injured are in critical condition.
An FIR was registered by the Manpada police in Maharashtra's Thane district around 01.50 am Friday - nearly 12 hours after the blast in the old boiler unit.
Following the registration of the FIR, Maharashtra Police detained the factory owner Malti Pradip Mehta and her son Mayal Pradip Mehta. The FIR also names some other directors of the factory.
The accused have been booked for culpable homicide (section 304), voluntarily causing hurt and negligent conduct with respect to combustible matter and explosive substances under the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The company had not taken precautions over mixing of chemicals, final products, and their storage knowing well that any lapses might lead to an explosion which could affect and damage the company and structures around it, according to the FIR.
