IIT Madras, one of the pioneers in Engineering Education and Research which had two years ago launched School of Medical Sciences, will soon offer undergraduate courses like MBBS and BDS.
Talking to India Today, Director of IIT Madras Professor V Kamakoti said the institution will soon launch a School of Medical Sciences and award medical degrees of its own.
"IIT Madras will certainly launch a School of Medical Science. We want to give medical degrees, and I think that will be something which will make the institute much bigger", Prof Kamakoti told India Today.
Prof Kamakoti’s statement came weeks after he was nominated as one of the members of a High-Powered Task Force formed to reform India's Examination System.
The task force, formed amid Gen Z protests over multiple paper leaks, unemployment and corruption in India’s education system, is headed by Infosys Co-Founder Nandan Nilekani.
“Those degrees would run the full range, the Undergraduate MBBS, the Postgraduate MD and the doctoral PhD”, Prof Kamakoti said while talking to India Today.
IIT Madras has already established School of Medical Sciences and Technology, which is operational since May 2023.
“IIT Madras has started the School of Medical Sciences and Technology under which we will be offering two state of the art courses”, Prof Kamakoti said in a video message posted on the institution’s website.
“The first course will be an Undergraduate program - a Bachelor Degree in Medical Sciences and Engineering which will deal with an engineering perspective to the working of the human body”, he said.
“The second program will be a Research Program, which will be open to both Doctors and Engineers who can pursue state of the art research issues in the area of Medicine and Technology”, he added.
Explaining why IIT Madras has decided to enter into Medical Education, Prof Kamakoti said, “We would like to define a very strong interface between these two wherein we bring in people with medical background and technological background into the same umbrella and come out with innovative solutions that would be the answer for many of the unsolved mysteries in the area of medicine and treatment.”
