Bangalore: Prime Minister's Scientific Advisory Council Chairman Prof C N R Rao today said mere increase in GDP growth India cannot achieve "Number One" position in the world.
It should accord top priority for education in science and technology so that the growth of the economy is sustained. The ''Country may achieve the expected GDP growth, but for long term development education plays an important role in maintaining sustainability in the growth,'' Prof Rao said after inaugurating a three-day conference organised by Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology (KSCST) here.
He said United States, which stood first in the world in economic development, was facing the threat of losing its position in the next ten to 15 years as China and India were marching ahead at a faster pace. ''In the next ten to 15 years, according to a survey, US will lose its 'numero uno' position and China, which is making strides in education, sports and economic development, emerging to take the top slot,'' he said.
''It is time for India to think how to achieve sustainable growth. Science should be encouraged from grassroots level.
Science teachers should be given more benefits to encourage them. South Korea and Singapore have overtaken US in education'', he added.
Prof Rao, who is also Chairman of the KSCST, said the Council was making allout efforts to not only impart quality education in rural areas, but also attract students to opt for science stream for long-term benefit of the country.
