CPI-M students' wing slams Rahul for equating Mao with Modi

Wednesday December 01, 2010 08:17:18 AM, IANS

Kolkata: The students' wing of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Tuesday slammed Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi for equating Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi with legendary Chinese communist leader Mao Zedong.

"Such statements reveal Rahul Gandhi's erroneous and preposterous understanding of politics," said a press statement issued by the Students' Federation of India (SFI).

Earlier this month, Gandhi caused a political furore with his comment: "Mao also developed China but he caused destruction to the country too", when asked to comment on the development work carried out by Modi in Gujrat.

The SFI said by comparing Mao with Modi, whose regime aided "genocide" against Muslim minorities in Gujarat in 2002, "is an affront to the struggle of toiling masses throughout the history of humankind".

"Such an understanding can only arise from one's inability to differentiate between the struggle against injustice and exploitation, and attempts to flare up fascistic hatred against religious minorities," said the statement.
