Malegaon:
The Superman of Malegaon, the documentary film which introduced
Mollywood - the local film industry to the International
audience as never before, has been included for screening
in Berlin on December 04, 2011.
"The complete 70 min screening of
the documentary film has been included as part of the 4-day special program
on film piracy titled 'Postcolonial Piracy-Media Distribution and Cultural
Production in the Global South'", Shaikh Nasir, Director of
Malegaon Ka Superman, said to ummid.com before leaving for Germany November
30.
"Superman of Malegaon will be
screened at Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin on December 04 at
01:00 PM local time", he added.
Shaik Nasir is accompanied by Faiza
Ahmed Khan, director of The Superman of Malegaon, and Ranjani
Mazumdar on this international tour.
While Ranjani Mazumdar has been
scheduled to introduce the documentary to the German audience, the
screening of the film will be followed by a discussion with Shaikh
Nasir and Faiza A Khan on 'Making of Malegaon ka Superman'.
Paying tribute to the Malegaon film
Industry and the film, the program chart reads:
"Malegaon, a small town tucked away
near the heart of India geographically, is fraught with communal
tension and under economic depression. To escape the harsh reality
of their world, its people seek refuge in the fantastical world of
cinema.
"We follow them on this journey. At times funny, tragic,
contemplative. Always warm and engaging. And as the film begins to
take shape, through schemes and approaches that are sublimely
ingenious, simply bizarre and purely hysterical, we also slowly
discover Malegaon itself. The film is a tribute to a spirit that
can never be vanquished, the spirit that enables The Supermen
of Malegaon to make Malegaon’s Superman."
Mollywood has been busy
making re-makes of the popular Bollywood numbers since last
more than two decades. Its film 'Malegaon Ka Superman' hit
the international headlines when Faiza Khan made a documentary
film on 'Making of Malegaon Ka Superman' simultaneously and
received the
Jury Award for Best Documentary at Asiatica
Film Mediale, Rome in 2008.
The film was
later selected for screening - first by Ocian’s Cinefan film
festival held in New Delhi, and later for the International Film
Festival of India (IFFI) which was held in Goa in November 2009.
In the same year, the film was also selected for the film
festivals held in United States, Pakistan, Romania, Poland,
Israel, Spain and China in quick successions. In January 2010, the
film was screened in Dhaka and Kuwait, and in February 2010 was
selected for Vesoul Asian FF, France.
A tragic moment
in the long and delightful journey of the film came when
Shafeeque Ahmed, the local hero who played the lead-role in
Malegaon Ka Superman died on September 07, 2011.
Shafeeques had earned laurels from
international film critics and experts when in his film he
campaigned against tobacco use and warned people about its danger.
But two years after completion of the film, he himself became victim
of the same menace. He was just 26 when died of cancer.
