Malegaon: Shaikh Nasir,
the film producer popularly known as 'Superman of Malegaon' who is credited to have introduced
the local film
industry at international arena, has been conferred the Maharashtrian
of the Year award by popular Marathi newspaper Lokmat yesterday.
The award to Shaikh Nasir, known for
producing Bollywood re-makes and honored for his internationally
acclaimed film 'Malegaon ka Superman', was conferred by the
President of India, Mrs. Pratibhatai Patil in a glittering
ceremony held in Mumbai Wednesday.
Lokmat had short listed the
Maharashtrian achievers, celebrities and unsung heroes in the
field of entertainment, culture, science, literature, social
service, art and politics and had put the list for voting through
SMSes and online forums before finalizing the awardees. It also
published their profiles with pictures in the newspapers to
encourage readers for voting.
Shaikh Nasir was awarded for his
outstanding contribution in the field of Entertainment. Others who
bagged the award include Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bacchan and a host
of others from Maharashtra who had performed excellently in their
respective fields.
Shaikh Nasir has been producing re-makes of the popular Bollywood numbers since last
more than a decade. His film 'Malegaon Ka Superman' hit
the international headlines when Faiza Khan made a documentary
film on 'Making of Malegaon Ka Superman' simultaneously and
received the
Jury Award for Best Documentary at Asiatica
Film Mediale, Rome in 2008.
The film was
later selected for screening - first by Ocian’s Cinefan film
festival held in New Delhi, and later for the International Film
Festival of India (IFFI) which was held in Goa in November 2009.
In the same year, the film was also selected for the film
festivals held in United States, Pakistan, Romania, Poland,
Israel, Spain and China in quick successions. In January 2010, the
film was screened in Dhaka and Kuwait, and in February 2010 was
selected for Vesoul Asian FF, France. On December 04 this year,
the documentary was also screened in Berlin.
However there
came a tragic moment
in the long and delightful journey of the film when
Shafeeque Ahmed, the local hero who played the lead-role in
Malegaon Ka Superman died on September 07, 2011.
Shafeeque had earned praise from
international film critics and experts for his performance in the
film where he had campaigned against tobacco use and warned people
about its danger. But two years after completion of the film, he
himself became victim of the same menace and died due to cancer at
the age of 26.
