              Hyderabad:
The Chowmahalla Palace, seat of power of Nizams, has been given
the prestigious UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Merit Award for
              Culture Heritage Conservation.

At a ceremony organised at the palace premises yesterday, UNESCO
representative Takahiko Makino handed over the plaque and
certificate to Princess Esra Jah, former wife of Prince Mukarram
              Jah Bahadur.

Bahadur is the grandson of the seventh Nizam Mir Osman Ali Khan.

The palace has undergone massive restoration after Princess Esra
initiated a project for the royal palaces in August 2000.

It involved various tasks, from stabilising the existing
structural components to reconstitution of collapsed and
dilapidated sections of the complex, restoration of external and
internal spaces and of decorative elements and finishes, palace
director G Kishan Rao told reporters.

"The restoration of Chowmahalla Palace has rescued an
extraordinary complex from years of abandonment.
