Malegaon: Making a comeback after a gap of five years, the
Congress party won the Mayoral elections held in the corporation
meeting hall on Friday with its
candidate Tahira Shaikh becoming the first lady Mayor of the city. Jameel Zarwala of its alliance partner Teesra Mahaz won the Deputy
Mayor elections.
Tahira Shaikh and Jameel Zarwala
secured 52 and 53 votes respectively defeating Rabea Shakeel and
Aziz Iqbal - both the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) -
Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) joint candidates.
The election results were officially
declared by the presiding officer, TK Bagul.
Congress candidate Tahira Shaikh,
who is also the wife of ex-MLA Shaikh Rasheed, and Teesra Mahaz
candidate Jameel Zarwala both were supported by 25 councilors of
Congress, 23 of Teesra Mahaz and 04 of Malegaon Vikas Agahdi.
The eleven member Shiv Sena and two
independent councilors abstained from voting whereas Janata Dal
(S) which has 04 councilors walked out of the house condemning the
murder of blast accused Qateel Siddiqui who was found dead in
Pune's Yerawada Jail on June 08.
Immediately after winning the
elections, Tahira Shaikh Rasheed and Jameel Zarwala both vowed to
work for the development of the city and promised the Malegaonians
to give a corruption free and transparent tenure.
"We are committed to the promises
made in the party manifesto and you can soon see them happening",
Tahira Shaikh said.
About their priorities, they said
that pending salaries of the teachers and to provide better
amenities are some of the major issues they would like to work on
with immediate effect.
