Shiv-Sena, NCP tie in Nashik MLC election

Tuesday May 29, 2012 01:56:43 AM, ummid.com Staff Reporter

Malegaon: Throwing an interesting election results, Shiv Sena and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) candidates, who contested the election held on May 25 for the Nashik legislative council seat, secured equal votes after the vote count on Monday.

This is the first time in the history of MLC elections that the outcome has resulted in a tie. Not finding any precedent and clear guidelines, Returning Officer and District Collector P Velrasu has referred the matter to the state election commission.

Along with 05 other seats in Maharashtra election for the Nashik MLC seat was also held on May 25. After the vote count which was done on Monday, it was found that Jayanat Jadhav of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Shivaji Sahane both had secured 224 votes each. Consequently, a recount was ordered. However the recount also resulted in a tie with both the candidates securing 221 votes.

Unable to make any decision and in the absence of any precedent, Returning Officer P Velrasu referred the matter to the Election Commission.

Nashik MLC constituency has a total of 475 votes that include voters from two corporations, and eight municipal councils and Zilla Parishad.

In the election that was held on May 25, a total of 467 eligible voters cast their votes.

Out of these 467 votes, election officers cancelled 25 votes citing different reasons. Of the total 442 valid votes the NCP and Shiv Sena candidates both secured equal votes.

The election result has stirred a debate in the Maharashtra politics as this is the first time in the MLC election the outcome has resulted in a tie.

Political observers while not dismissing the possibility of a re-poll are also hinting that the election result can also be decided by a draw done in front of both the candidates.

However, the matter is now with the election commission and what decision the commission takes will be clear in a day or two.
