Malegaon:
Throwing an interesting election results, Shiv Sena and
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) candidates, who contested the
election held on May 25 for the Nashik legislative council seat, secured equal
votes after the vote count on Monday.
This is the first time in the
history of MLC elections that the outcome has resulted in a tie.
Not finding any precedent and clear guidelines, Returning Officer
and District Collector P Velrasu has referred the matter to the
state election commission.
Along with 05 other seats in
Maharashtra election for the Nashik MLC seat was also held on May
25. After the vote count which was done on Monday, it was found
that Jayanat Jadhav of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and
Shivaji Sahane both had secured 224 votes each. Consequently, a
recount was ordered. However the recount also resulted in a tie
with both the candidates securing 221 votes.
Unable to make any decision and in
the absence of any precedent, Returning Officer P Velrasu referred
the matter to the Election Commission.
Nashik MLC constituency has a total
of 475 votes that include voters from two corporations, and eight
municipal councils and Zilla Parishad.
In the election that was held on May
25, a total of 467 eligible voters cast their votes.
Out of these 467 votes, election
officers cancelled 25 votes citing different reasons. Of the total
442 valid votes the NCP and Shiv Sena candidates both secured
equal votes.
The election result has stirred a
debate in the Maharashtra politics as this is the first time in
the MLC election the outcome has resulted in a tie.
Political observers while not
dismissing the possibility of a re-poll are also hinting that the
election result can also be decided by a draw done in front of
both the candidates.
However, the matter is now with the
election commission and what decision the commission takes will be
clear in a day or two.
