Nay Pyi Taw: India and Myanmar have "embarked on a new journey of bilateral cooperation", Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Monday said during his talks with President Thein Sein.

Manmohan Singh, who landed here Sunday, told Thein Sein at the 100-room presidential palace here that India was committed to strengthening its "economic and development partnership with Myanmar".

According to spokesperson of the external affairs ministry Syed Akbaruddin, the prime minister also said: "We wish you all success in your nation building efforts and changes you are bringing about."

In a series of messages put out on the microblogging site Twitter, the prime minister was quoted as saying that "capacity building" was a "major priority" of the development assistance programme.

Manmohan Singh told Thein Sein, who is powering dramatic reforms in the country, that India intended to double training slots for Myanmar.

Manmohan Singh, who was accorded an impressive guard of honour in this new Myanmar capital, is the first Indian prime minister to visit the resource-rich country in 25 years.

Manmohan Singh goes to Yangon Tuesday where he will meet pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi before returning home.

Manmohan Singh's visit will be a signal to India Inc to do business with and in Myanmar, a country rich in natural resources and home to54 million people.

India-Myanmar trade is currently pegged at just $1.2 billion. New Delhi is looking at doubling it by 2015.

The late Rajiv Gandhi was the last Indian prime minister to visit Myanmar in 1987.
