Washington: Highlighting the rapidly growing trade and economic engagement
between India and the US, Indian ambassador Nirupama Rao has
conveyed her deep appreciation to a key lawmaker for his support
for high-skilled immigration.
The ambassador discussed this issue of significant interest for
Indian businesses in the US during a meeting Monday with Robert
Menendez, Democratic chairman of the senate foreign relations
committee. There was also a discussion on the proposed immigration
reform bill proposed by the Senate Gang of Eight of which Menendez
is a member, , according to an Indian Embassy media release.
Menendez, who is also a member of the Senate India Caucus, has
long championed the interests of the Indian American community in
the US Congress.
Rao and Menendez also exchanged views on the latest developments
in India-US relations and highlighted the shared values and
interests binding their strategic partnership, the Embassy release
said.
"They expressed appreciation for the strength provided to this
partnership by the rich and vibrant contributions of the Indian
American community in the United States." It said.
Rao and Menendez also exchanged views on the regional situation in
South Asia.
Rao invited Senator Menendez to visit India. He accepted the
invitation for such a visit at a mutually convenient time, the
release said.
