Saturday February 1, 2014 10:12 PM, IANS

A Mexican group presented a skit on episodes from Mahatma Gandhi's life, including the Salt March, at a cultural event in Matehuala city, where a bronze bust of the apostle of peace was also unveiled.

Indian Envoy Sujan R. Chinoy unveiled the bust of Mahatma Gandhi, measuring 42 inches, mounted on a five-feet tall pedestal Jan 30, which marked Martyr's Day.

The bust was donated by Chinoy on behalf of the Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR) and dedicated to the youth of Matehuala in San Luis Potosi state, said a statement from the Indian embassy in Mexico.

Mahatma Gandhi is a much revered figure in Mexico. There is a statue on an avenue named after him in the capital Mexico City. In addition, there are two busts on main avenues in Guadalajara city and the resort of Acapulco.

Hundreds of students and local dignitaries, including University of Matehuala rector Alfonso Nava Diaz and Matehuala Mayor Hector Avila Luceror, attended the event.

Chinoy said that thousands of miles away from his homeland, Mahatma Gandhi's bust would light the path of truth and non-violence for the people of Matehuala and remind them of the true path whenever they are in doubt.
