Ahmedabad: In yet another indication that all is not well for Vijay Rupani in Rajkot West from where he is contesting the upcoming state election, BJP workers exchanged blows with Congress workers outside the residence of the chief minister late in the night Saturday.
While it is not yet clear what action the police took against the BJP workers, reports said Congress candidate from Rajkot West Indranil Rajyaguru, Congress candidate Mitul Donga Rajkot East and another party worker have been detained.
The clashes between the two groups broke out when BJP workers allegedly tried to remove Congress posters in the constituency ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the city. Rajyaguru and his brother Dipu Rajyaguru tried to stop the BJP workers, leading to a brawl.
A badly injured Dipu was rushed to the hospital, while Indranil Rajyaguru — the richest candidate in Gujarat elections — was detained by police. A video of Rajyaguru being hauled into a police van went viral within hours of his detention.
Rajkot continued to be on the edge following the incident as thousands of Congress supporters flocked to the district police headquarters to protest against Rajyaguru’s detention.
“A scuffle broke out between Congress and BJP workers over posters being torn,” Joint Commissioner of Police Dipak Bhatt told the media.
On hearing of the incident, Indranil Rajyaguru and other Congress leaders attempted to protest outside the chief minister’s house. “We tried to reason it out with him, but they wanted to take law in their hands,” Bhatt said.
Rupani is contesting polls from his Rajkot West seat against Rajyaguru. Elections will be held in Rajkot on December 9.
Two days ago, an audio purportedly of Vijay Rupani was taking round in the media in which the Chief Minister is allegedly heard admitting that he is facing a tough challenge in his constituency and that the situation is not favorable for him.
In yet another indication that Rupani is indeed in trouble, a viral video showed his scooter rally which had just few dozen people.
