The State Election Commission in Gujarat has made elaborate arrangements in Ahmedabad where counting of votes for 2017 Assembly Elections is set to start at 08:00 am.
Ahemdabad has a total of 21 assembly seats including Viramgam, Sanand, Ghatlodia, Vejalpur, Vatva, Ellisbridge, Naranpura, Nikol, Naroda, Thakkarbapa Nagar, Bapunagar, Amraiwadi, Dariapur, Jamalpur-Khadiya, Maninagar, Danilimda, Sabarmati, Asarwa, Daskroi, Dholka and Dhandhuka.
While all the seats are important, election results of Jamalpur-Khadiya and Naroda are keenly watched as they are dominated by Muslims.
The constituency to watch out for is Rajkot West where Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was faced with Congress leader Indranil Rajyaguru.
OBC-dominated Gandhidham in Saurashtra region is an urban seat which elected BJP’s Maheshwari Ramesh Vachchhraj as MLA in 2012 with a margin of 72,988 votes. This time 29-year-old Malti Maheshwari, BJP’s youngest candidate, is contesting against Congress’s Kishor Pingol. Both are Dalit leaders.
Muslim-majority Abdasa in Saurashtra region is the largest constituency in Gujarat Assembly Elections 2017, spread over an area of 6,278 sq km. Another Muslim-dominated constituency is Mandvi. Out of the 2.24 lakh voters here, 50,000 are Muslims, followed by 31,000 Dalits, 25,000 Patidars and 21,000 Rajputs. Chheda Tarachand Jagashi of the BJP had won from Mandvi in 2012 with 61,984 votes.
Voting to elect the new body of the 182-member Gujarat Assembly were held in 02 phases. The first phase election for 89 seats was held on December 09 whereas the second phase of elections for the remaining 93 seats were held on December 14.
The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) is ruling since last 22 years in Gujarat. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the party president Amit Shah both are from Gujarat. Hence the stakes are high for the party and the two leaders to retain power in the crucial state.
On the other hand a resurgent Congress led by its newly elected Rahul Gandhi in association with three youth leaders - Hardik Patel, Jignesg Mewani and Alpesh Thakur, have all given a stiff challenge to the ruling BJP.
Hard questions were raised by these young leaders so frequently in election rallies and so strongly that the ruling BJP was seemingly on back foot. Not finding any answer to cruel questions, the BJP immediately switched to its age-old communal angle, and led by none other than Prime Minister Modi himself, tried every bit in hand to polarise voters on communal lines.
Because of the strong opposition the ruling BJP faced on the ground, it was widely expected that it will be tough for it to retain power. However all Exit Polls and Surveys aired soon after polling ended on December 14 have predicted a "thumping victory" for the BJP.
The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) will retain power in Gujarat, though with less number of seats as compared to its tally in 2012, majority of the Exit Polls said on Thursday.
