Ranchi: Simon Marandi, a Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) legislator, is in news for organising a "kissing contest" for local couples during a two-day fair which ended in Dumaria village, about 321 km from the state capital, on Saturday.
The event was the highlight of the Sido-Kanhu fair held in Littipara block in Pakur district of Jharkhand every year.
The kissing competition was added for the first time to the list of events. Participants in the kissing competition were married couple from the tribal community, according to Prabhat Khabar.
Over 18-odd tribal couples locked their lips in the presence of thousands of people in the never-seen-before competition, accordingt to Hindutsan Times.
Marandi said such competitions would help strengthen the relationship between the husband and wife in the tribal community.
“Tribals are basically innocent and illiterate. Due to which, the family system is weakening. To make them aware of our social structure and responsibility towards the family, the idea of a kissing competition was conceived,” Marandi, MLA representing the Littipara assembly seat said.
“Earlier, the village competition was organised in a smaller space but this year it was held in a football ground where thousands of people from other villagers also took part,” Marandi said.
BJP Yuva leader Saheb Hansda has slammed MLA Marandi for holding the "chumban contest".
"He has insulted the poor adivasis (tribals) by organising such an event", he said.
