Saharanpur (Uttar Pradesh): Amid debate whether Muslims voted or not for the Bahrtiya Janata Party (BJP) in the recently concluded Uttar Pradesh state elections, a woman from Saharanpur wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi candidly admitting she did so and now wants him to abolish "Triple Talaq".
Saharanpur: I wrote a letter to PM Modi requesting #TripleTalaq to be abolished, I voted for him, I hope I now get justice - Shagufta Shah said according to news agency ANI.
A mother of two-daughters, Shafugta, when got pregnant for the third time, her in-laws asked her to abort it fearing it might be a girl as well.
Refusing to do the same, the woman underwent torture and physical abuse. In the rage of anger, her husband Shamshad verbally gave her Triple Talaq and stranded her.
"Refusing to go for abortion, they beat me mercilessly. My husband then verbally gave me Triple Talaq and threw me out of the house", she said in her letter a copy of which has also been sent to UP Chief Minister Adityanath.

Shagufta Shah's appeal to Prime Minister Modi came a day after the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) urged the Supreme Court of India not to bring any change in the existing practice. The board even urged the apex court to quash the pending petitions against concurrent Triple Talaq.
The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the matter on Thursday. The Apex Court had earlier said it would pronounce a judgement on the petitions before May 11. The court had earlier made it clear that it is looking on the issue only on humanitarian angle and religious perspective of the issue is not under its consideration.
Differences over triple talaq dates back to the era of second Caliph Omar (RA) who was the first person to make it valid, though Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) and first Caliph Abu Bakr (RA) were strictly opposed to it.
In recent years owing to the problems women are facing due to the misuse of triple talaq by husbands, a majority of Islamic States basing their decision on the ruling of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) abolished concurrent triple talaq in their respective countries.
The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) in India however remains adamant on its stand, despite a strong demand for an immediate amendment, which is also supported by its own members, and does not agree to any change.
Even as the Supreme Court was hearing the petitions against triple talaq, the Bahrtiya Janata Party (BJP) made it an election issue in the UP state election, promising the Muslim women to abolish the practice if it won the elections.
