Bhiwandi: In a strong show of elctoral victory, the Congress party sweeped the Bhiwandi Nizampur Municipal Corporation (BNCMC) elections winning 47 of the total 90 seats results of which were announced by the state election commision after counting of votes on Friday.
The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) which tried hard to wrest power here in Bhiwandi - the textile city located just 50 kms from Maharashtra capital Mumbai, with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis himself leading the campiagn. But, the party ended with just 19 seats.
The Shiv Sena which contested the Bhiwandi elections alone could win 12 seats whereas the Samajwadi Party (SP) bagged 02 seats. Others including Konark Vikas Aghadi won on 10 seats.
The most humiliating result in Bhiwandi is for the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). The NCP formed alliance with Samajwadi Party (SP) of Abu Asim Azami to contest the Bhiwandi elections. The party however could not win a single seat.

12:15 pm The Congress on Friday appeared to be emerging as the single largest party in Bhiwandi. According to the trends available at 12:00 pm, the Congress candidates are leading on as many as 14 seats whereas the Shiv Sena is a close second with a lead on 10 seats.
11:30 am The Congress and Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) are in neck-and-neck battle to capture power in Bhiwandi. According to the trends at 11:00 am, while the Congress is ahead on 11 seats, the BJP is leading on 10 seats.
The Shiv Sena candidates are leading on 07 seats.
The NCP is ahead on 05 seats whereas Konark Vikas Aghadi candidates are leading on 04 seats.

09:45 am Counting of votes to elect the new body of 90-member Bhiwandi Nizampur City Municipal Corporation (BNMC) also called asBhiwandi Nizampur Mahanagar Plaika is scheduled to begin today i.e. Friday May 26, 2017 at 10:00 am, an election officer said. The powerloom city in Maharashtra went to polls on Wednesday, recording 53 per cent voter turnout.
Along with Bhiwandi-Nizampur, Malegaon and Panvel municipal corporations also went to the poll on Wednesday May 24. Counting of votes in all the three civic bodies will start at 10:00 am today, the election officer added.
In Bhiwandi, the main parties in the fray are the Congress, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) - Samajwadi Party alliance, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), Shiv Sena, Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), Konark Vikas Aghadi and a large number of independents.
A total of 460 candidates belonging to the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress, Shiv Sena, Nationalist Congress party (NCP), Samajwadi Party (SP), All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), Konark Vikas Aghadi and others are in the fray for the Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporation (BNCMC) elections to be held on May 24.
According to the final list of candidates released by Municipal Commissioner Dr Yogesh Mhase (IAS), the ruling Congress party has fielded 64 candidates - the maximum number if comapred with other parties.
The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) which is trying hard to control power in this textile hub located about 50 kms from state capital Mumbai has fielded 57 candidates.
The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Samajwadi Party (SP) have formed alliance for the 2017 Bhiwandi Municipal Corporation elections and have fielded a total of 64 candidates - 32 from each of the parties.
Other candidates contesting the elections are 55 of the Shiv Sena, 16 of Konark Vikas Aghadi, 08 of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), 07 of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and 05 of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).
Rest including 170 Independent candidates are from Republican Party of India (RPI), Bahujan Maha Sangh, Janata Dal United, Ekta Wadi Sambhaji Brigade and RPI Secular.
The Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporation (BNCMC) has a total 90 members to be elected from 23 wards or parbhags of the city.
A maximum 30 candidates are contesting elections from Ward No 04 and Ward No 12 whereas a minimum 07 candidates are trying their luck from Ward No. 22.
The existing body of the Bhiwandi - Nizampur Municipal Corporation fromed after 2012 election has 26 members from Congress, 16 members from Shiv Sena, 16 from Samajwadi Party (SP), 09 from Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), 08 from Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) and 07 from Konark Vikas Aghadi. The remaining are Independents.
