Panvel: The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) won a landslide victory in the first ever Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) elections bagging 51 of the total 78 seats, according to the final results announced by the state election commission Friday afternoon.
The Peasants and Workers Party (PWP), which contested the elections in an alliance with Congress, came second winning 23 seats. The Congress bagged 02 seats.
The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) which also contested the Panvel civic elections could win just 02 seats.
The Shiv Sena had also fielded its candidates in the election of Panvel Maha Nagar Palika but none of its candidates could win.

The important city in Mumbai suburbs Panvel went to polls on Wednesday, recording 53 per cent voter turnout.
Along with Panvel, Bhiwandi-Nizampur and Malegaon municipal corporations also went to the poll on Wednesday May 24. Counting of votes in all the three civic bodies will start at 10:00 am today, the election officer added.
The Panvel area has a strong presence of the PWP and NCP, but the BJP is hoping to make inroads here on the back of its victories in local body polls across the state.
The BJP is contesting the polls along with the RPI (A) led by Union Minister Of State Ramdas Athawale here in Panvel. The Peasants and Workers Party (PWP) is contesting in an alliance with Congress and NCP, while the Shiv Sena is contesting in alliance with the MP Raju Shetti-led Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana.
A total of 418 candidates are in the fray in Panvel. The Panvel Municipal Corporation includes areas such as Panvel old city, regions under CIDCO such as Kharghar, Kamothe, Kalamboli, New Panvel, Taloja, and also 29 adjoining villages.
