Mumbai: Shreya Chavan, a Class 12 student, has filed an online petition addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to use the fund he wanted to spend for bullet train to improve the existing infrastructure of railways.
The petition started online a days after the tragic stampede near Elphinstone Road Railwas Station has been so far signed by more than 13,500 people.
"If students are not able to travel to college by trains then what is the point of a bullet train," asks Shreya, an arts student of Ruia college.
"Statistically speaking, nine people die everyday on the tracks of Mumbai. Under this scenario the funding used for Mumbai- Ahmedabad Bullet Train should be invested in improving the conditions of Mumbai Local Trains", Shreya wrote in her petition started five days ago.
"And it’s not development if it’s not beneficial to the majority population". she added.
"This could be done by adding railway tracks, extending the footover bridges, adding coaches to the train.
If a normal individual can pool in such mediocre ideas, the railway department can definitely find better ways to improvisation", she said.
"It’s not that changes haven’t been made, but evidently they aren’t sufficient to the present population. Hence, please sign the petition so that the government takes necessary changes", she said.
Meanwhile, NCP President Sharad Pawar on Wednesday also joined the chorus against bullet train saying the train is built only for rich and spending such a huge amount on a single project is not advisable.
Pawar also said that the train will run only 35 minutes in Maharashtra covering a small distance but the state has been asked to share a huge amount.
Raj Thackeray, MNS President, has already expressed his opposition against the PM Modi's pet project.
Interestingly, an old video of Prime Minister Modi has also resurfaced in which he is seen telling that the bullet train is being built only to impress the world.
