New Delhi:
Elections for the 182-member Gujarat Assembly will be held in two phases on December 09 and December 14, and counting of votes will be done on December 18, the Chief Election Commission announced on Wednesday.

While in the first phase 89 seats of Gujarat will go to the polls, on December 14 in the second and final phase polling for the remaining 93 seats will be held.

The Election Commission had already announced that polling for the 68-member Himacal Pradesh Assembly will be held on November 09.

Counting of votes in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh will be held on December 18 simultaneously.

A model code of conduct, which prohibits announcements that can influence voters, comes into effect immediately.

The Gujarat elections have been announced 13 days after the Election Commission declared poll dates for Himachal Pradesh.

The delay prompted opposition party Congress to accuse the Centre of pressuring the election body to allow the BJP more time to announce sops and launch big projects, a charge that both the Election Commission and the ruling party have rejected.

The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) is ruling in Gujarat since last 22 years. This is the first state election after Narendra Modi who was the chief minister won the Lok Sabha polls and became prime minister.

Gujarat assembly elections will be the acid test for Prime Minister Modi as his popularity is on decline following his decision to ban currency notes and impose GST.

BJP president Amit Shah has set a target of winning 150 out of the total 182 seats. However in the present scenario the target looks too much to achieve, though pollseters are predicting that the party will regain the state winning some 100-110 seats.
