Bengaluru: In a notable endorsement of the contribution of Tipu Sultan - the freedom fighter and symbol of resistance against the Imperialists forces, President Ramnnath Kovind on Wednesday said the erstwhile Mysore ruler was a hero who died fighting the British.
While addressing the Karnataka’s legislative assembly on Wednesday President Kovind also mentioned Tipu Sultan’s contribution to the invention of Mysore rockets.
“He was also the pioneer in the development and use of Mysore rockets in warfare. This technology was later adopted by the Europeans,” the President said while addressing the joint session to mark the diamond jubilee celebration of Vidhan Soudha.
"Tipu Sultan was at the forefront of the fight against the British. He changed the course of development in the state and used Mysuru rockets in warfare - the technology later adopted by the Europeans", the president said.
The President's endorsement of Tipu Sultan's contribution in India's freedom struggle has not gone down well with the state BJP leaders who are running a malicious campaign against the martyr.
Few days ago Union Minister Anantkumar Hegde called Tipu Sultan a “mass rapist” and “brutal killer”, prompting his descendant Sahabzada Mansoor Ali Tipu to lodge complaint and demanding from Prime Minister Modi to drop him from the cabinet.
Alleging that Hegde’s comments could stoke “communal sentiments”, he demanded that the Prime should drop him from his council of ministers.
“The tweets of Hegde are distasteful and hurt not only family sentiments, but also the sentiments of the country. Modi should sack him as Union minister,” he said.
Ali, who said he was a 7th generation descendant of Tipu Sultan, added that he was in touch with others in the family, including Bakhtiar Ali in Kolkata, who is contemplating taking legal action against Hegde.
Interestingly, the BJP leaders had earlier celebrated Tipu Jayanti in the past, and to expose the double standard of the party, photos of its leaders dressed like Tipu Sultan are widely circulated in the media.
