New Delhi: A day after Lok Sabha passed a bill criminalizing instant talaq, a man in Rampur divorced his wife using the same method, prompting the wife to approach police and demand jail for the erring husband.
According to local newspapers, Ayesha Khatun approached local police station on Friday after her husband Kashif pronounced triple talaq in one go and demanded jail for him.
The Muslim Women Protection of Rights on Marriage Bill - popularly known as the Triple Talaq bill, makes instant talaq illegal with up to three years in jail for the husband. It was passed by the Lok Sabha on Thursday.
Kashif was in Delhi when the bill was passed by the Lok Sabha. He came to Rampur on Friday and pronounced triple talaq to divorce his wife.
Reports said Kashif was staying away from his wife for the last two months and returned to the Kheda Tanda village of Rampur district on Friday night.
Ayesha was happy and excited to see her husband back. However, as soon as she opened the door, Kashif said ‘talaq talaq talaq’ and went back to Delhi. Ayesha was shocked at this behavior and she reportedly even lost her consciousness due to the trauma.
Following the incident Ayesha has complained to the police demanding jail for Kashif.
The police has registered a case against Kashif, his mother, and two others. The police is however puzzled as to which section to apply against the "accused" as the bill is still to be passed by Rajya Sabh and signed by the President of India to become a law.
