Kasganj Riot

Lucknow:
Two shops and a bus was torched in Kasganj near Etah in Uttar Pradesh as fresh clashes erupted between two communities early on Saturday, police said.

The Uttar Pradesh Police tweeted that they have arrested at least nine people in connection with the clashes yesterday.

Curfew was imposed in Kasganj after one person was killed and several others were injured in the town following communal violence.

Trouble began in the town when some unidentified people hurled stones at a motorcycle rally taken out by volunteers of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on the Mathura-Bareilly highway.

According to sources, some people were also injured in the incident and a number of vehicles and shops were vandalised.

Additional DG (Law and Order) Anand Kumar had on Friday said that the situation was under control. However reports of fresh clashes came on Saturday in which shops and bus were set on fire.

The district administration had imposed Section 144 of CrPC in the trouble-hit area, DM R P Singh said.

The injured person who later succumbed to bullet injuries has been identified as Sushil Gupta, a resident of Shivalaya, Railway Road in the town.

Two others who sustained serious injuries — Naushad and Prince — have been referred to Aligarh where the condition of the latter is stated to be very critical.
