
Kolkata: The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) in an unprecedented decision allowed 12-years-old Saifa Khatun to appear in the 2019 West Bengal Madhyamik, also known as, Class 10, board examination to be held in the month of February.
Saifa Khatun, has never enrolled in any school, but has been allowed to sit for WBBSE Madhyamik 10th 2019 exam as an external candidate, after the board took an eligibility test.
"Saifa Khatun qualified the eligibility test conducted by the WBBSE for external candidates in August", WBBSE president Kalyanmoy Ganguly is qouted as saying by PTI.
"Her case is "unprecedented" in the history of Madhyamik Examination (Class 10 board examination) in the past two decades", he added.
"The minimum age to appear in the examination is 14", Ganguly said.
Saifa Khatun, who hails from Howrah district, secured 52 per cent marks in the eligibility test, results of which were announced on October 11.
As per the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) Madhyamik Class 10 date sheet released earlier, the WBBSE secondary exam will start on February 12, 2019 with First Language as the first paper. The last paper of Optional Subjects will be held on February 22, 2019.
Each exam will begin at 11:45 am and end at 3:00 pm. Each paper will be of 03 hours 15 minutes duration. However, for the first 15 minutes only the question paper will be given for reading. Candidates won't be allowed to write at that time.
The WBBSE 2019 will be held earlier than previous years. The 2018 WBBSE board exams were delayed because of Panchayat elections.
Another West Bengal board official said Saifa's father Mohammed Ainul had moved the WBBSE to allow her to sit for the Madhyamik Examination 2019.
The last such instance of an external candidate appearing in the board examination before the minimum age was in the early 90s, the official said.
