Bhopal: Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, an accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the party office here on Thursday.
"I have formally joined the BJP; I will contest the elections and win," she told to the media.
According to a report, she has met former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and other senior BJP leaders at the party office here.
Sadhvi Pragya was charged in the Malegaon blasts in September 2008. Six people were killed and over 100 injured when an explosive device strapped on a motorcycle went off near a mosque in Malegaon in north Maharashtra, on September 29, 2008.
The motorcycle was later traced to the Sadhvi leading her arrest in the case. Her arrest had also unearthed a hitherto hidden gang of Hindu extremists allegedly involved in terrorist activities.
Though the court dropped provisions of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against her, she is being tried under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). She was granted bail by the Bombay High Court last year after being in jail for nine years.
Earlier, there were reports that the BJP is considering to field her against Congress leader and former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh Digvijaya Singh in Bhopal.
