New Delhi: Noted activist and award winning writer Arundhati Roy Wednesday called upon the students to protect Muslims and other weaker sections since they are under attack.

"We are all together protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019, NRC and now NPR. But, only Muslims are being attacked and targetted. The situation in Uttar Pradesh is worrisome", Arundhati Roy said while addressing the students in Delhi University.

"It seems Adityanath is preparing to repeat the same thing that Modi had done in Gujarat", she said.

"Against this backdrop, it is necessary for all of us to go and patrole such areas, and work as shields for the Muslims in UP who are under attack", she said.

Recalling the night when Jamia students were protesting against outside Delhi Police Headquarters at ITO, she said, "For them, we all are villians... belonging to tukde tukde gang. It's because (In their eyes) Muslims are terrorists, Dalits and Adivasis are Maoists and students are Urban Naxal when they raise to fight for their rights."

Recalling her experience in Assam she said, "For the people in Assam, documents are important than anything else. Floods are regular in the state. But, they will save their documents before saving their kins and properties. It's because of this so many people were able to prove their citizenship. Yet some 19 lakh people were still left out", she said.

About National Population Register (NPR), Arundhati Roy said it will serve as a database for the National Register of Citizens.

"Now what is NPR? NPR has happened before. In NPR, they will come to your house, they won't ask you anything, they ask you for your name and phone number. It is a database for NRC", she said.

"But we have to fight them for the next 4 years. First, we should not give them four years, but we must have a plan. When they come to your house asking for your name, you give them some other name -- like Ranga Billa, Kung-Fu Kutta, give your address as 7 Race Course Road and let's fix one phone number. But we need multiple subversion. We were not born for lathis and bullets."

She also accused Prime Minister Modi of deliberately lying in his speech at Ramlila Maidan on Sunday.

"He deliberately said all these things. He knew a simple search on internet will expose his lies. He said there is no detention center in the country even though he knew there are photos.. there is a budget. His speech was actually meant for the people who were listening to him on TV but do not have access to internet to cross-check", she said.
