New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India Friday said Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Chief Mayawati should deposit the money used for building her giant statues and party symbols in various parts of Lucknow and Noida during her tenure in Uttar Pradesh.
"We are of the tentative view that Mayawati has to deposit the public money spent on her statues and party symbol to the state exchequer," SC bench headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi said.
The SC bench made the above remarks while hearing a petition on the issue filed by advocate Ravi Kant in 2009, according to PTI.
Kant in his petition has said that then Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati had spent crores of rupees on statues which was irresponsible considering the number of people living below poverty line in the state.
The bench, also comprising of Justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjeev Khanna, made it clear that it is the tentative view of the court and posted the matter for further hearing on April 2.
Meanwhile, BSP leader Satish Chandra Misra told ANI that it was only the Supreme Court’s observation and not an order. “The only thing ordered was that the next hearing will be in April,” he said.
Mayawati was the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh between 2007 and 2012. During this time, the state government had built memorials of Dalit leaders, including the founder of BSP Kanshi Ram, and of herself besides the party’s election symbol – elephants. According to reports, the memorials and statues were built at a cost of over Rs 2,600 crore.
