Jamia Millia Islamia out of the ambit of 10 pc EWS quota: Official

Modi government had on January 07, 2019 announced to provide 10 percent quota to Economically poor people

New Delhi: Being a Minority Educational Institutions, Jamia Millia Islamia is out of the ambit of the 10 percent reservation in government jobs and education recently announced by the union government, an official said.

Citing a letter by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD), the varsity official said, "Jamia Millia Islamia has been declared a Minority Educational Institution under Article 30 (1) of the Constitution of India by the National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions, Government of India in 2011."

"In view of the above facts, Jamia Millia Islamia is also exempted from implementing this scheme", he added.

The Modi government had on January 07, 2019 announced to provide 10 percent quota to Economically poor people from the upper castes (general category). The government had also decided to increase by 10 per cent seats in various institutions.

However, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD, GoI vide letter No. 12-4/2019-U1 dated 17/01/2019, Para 2(b) exempted 8 institutions of excellence, research institutions, institutions of national & strategic importance as specified in the Schedule to The Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Act, 2006 and to the Minority Educational Institutions referred to in clause (1) of the Article 30 of the Constitution of India from implementing this scheme.

The specialised institutions kept out of the ambit of the new 10 per cent reservation are: 1. Homi Bhabha National Institute, Mumbai and its constituent units, 2. Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai, 3. North-Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Science, Shillong, 4. National Brain Research Centre, Manesar, Gurgaon, 5. Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore., 6. Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad, 7. Space Physics Laboratory, Thiruvananthapuram and 8. Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Dehradun.
