New Delhi: Barely two days after he was reinstated by the Supreme Court as CBI Chief, Alok Verma is sacked from his post. Alok Verma's removal as CBI Chief came after a marathon meeting of high-powered selection committee led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi Thursday, govt officials said.
"Alok Verma, a 1979-batch AGMUT cadre IPS officer, has been removed from the high-profile post on the charges of corruption and dereliction of duty making him the first chief in the history of the agency to face such action", PTI quoted officials.
Verma has been posted as Director General Fire Service, Civil Defence and Home Guards. Additional director M Nageshwar Rao has been given interim charge of CBI chief till the appointment of a new director, PK Tirpathi, Secretary Appointments Committee of the Cabinet and Establishment Officer said.
The meeting of the 3-member committee comprising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Justice A K Sikri deputising for the Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, lasted for nearly three hours and ended a little before 7 pm. Kharge was the only member who gave a dissent note on the decision to oust Verma.
Kharge said during the meeting that Verma should not be penalised and be given an extension of 77 days for which he was not allowed to attend the office, according to PTI.
According to sources, the Central Vigilance Commission has sought a criminal investigation against Alok Verma in the Moin Qureshi case. They also say the CBI in all likelihood may initiate a preliminary inquiry against the former director.
The Supreme Court of India had reinstated Alok Verma as CBI Chief on Tuesday. The apex court had however refrained Verma from taking any major policy decision untill a statutory Committee constituted under the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act meets on his removal.
Congress president Rahul Gandhi slammed the government on the ouster of Alok Verma. Gandhi alleged that Alok Verma was sacked because he was probing the Rafale deal.
"Fear is now rampaging through Mr Modi’s mind. He can’t sleep", Rahil Gandhi tweeted.
Reacting to news of Alok Verma's ouster, Rajasthan Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot said, "There is something murky going on which needs to be investigated. The Congress party has already objected to it. Something very suspicious about all this."
The Congress party had earlier slammed the decision, saying, "By removing #AlokVerma from his position without giving him the chance to present his case, PM Modi has shown once again that he's too afraid of an investigation, either by an independent CBI director or by Parliament via JPC."
