New Delhi: Campaigning came to an end on Saturday in 51 constituencies spread over seven states which will go to the polls on Monday in the fifth phase of the mega seven-phase electoral exercise.
Since poll timings vary in different seats, the campaigning period also ended at different times between 4 p.m and 6 p.m., 48 hours before the voting closure time at each constituency.
The 48-hour period preceding the conclusion of voting is called the "silence period" during which any kind of political campaigning is prohibited.
As the silence period began, election rallies and street corner meetings ended in 14 constituencies in Uttar Pradesh, 12 in Rajasthan, 07 each in Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal, 05 in Bihar and 04 in Jharkhand.
Campaigning also ended in Ladakh, and Pulwama and Shopian districts of Anantnag constituency in Jammu and Kashmir.
Among the 14 seats of Uttar Pradesh which will vote on Monday is Amethi - the Congress bastion from where Rahul Gandhi is seeking re-election. Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi was in the constituency for the whole day and addressed a series of meetings to make sure that Rahul wins with a record margin.
Priyanka went from village to village but refused to climb on to the dais. Instead, she stood around the people and asked who they would vote for.
She said: "Kyon pade ho chakkar mein" and the people responded with ‘Koi nahin hai takkar mein", and "Apna neta kaisa ho" completed with "Rahul Gandhi jaisa ho".
Priyanka then listed the projects that had been withdrawn from Amethi after the Modi government came to power and rebutted the allegations levelled by Irani that Rahul Gandhi does not visit his constituency.
BJP president Amit Shah held a road show in Amethi Saturday and sought votes for party nominee Smriti Irani. As the road show wound its way through the district, chants of "Jai Shri Ram" rent the air. Several state Ministers and senior party leaders participated in the event.
Few hours into the end of campaigning period, Rahul Gandhi too arrived in Amethi and addressed a group of women of the constituency.
Later talking to media persons Rahul said that he had no animosity towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
"I will fight with him on issues and not at a personal level. I believe that you can win with love and not hatred. I tell my party men also not to use harsh words but when things go beyond limits, I even take action," he said.
Rahul Gandhi said that a good leader should own up to his mistakes and try to rectify them.
